**among: **[OE] _Gemong _was an Old English word for ‘crowd’ – ge- was a collective prefix, signifying ‘together’, and -_mong _is related to _mingle _– and so the phrase _on gemonge _meant ‘in a crowd’, hence ‘in the midst, surrounded’. By the 12th century, the ge- element had dropped out, giving _onmong _and eventually among. A parallel _bimong _existed in the 13th century.
