**message: **[13] Etymologically, a _message _is something that is ‘sent’. The word comes via Old French _message _from Vulgar Latin *missāticum, a derivative of the Latin verb _mittere _(from which English also gets admit, mission, transmit, etc). _Messenger _[13] comes from the Old French derivative messager, and was originally _messager _in English; the _n _is a 14thcentury intruder, found also in such words as _harbinger _and passenger.
