receive
**receive: **[13] To _receive _something is etymologically to ‘take it back’. The word comes via Old French _receivre _from Latin _recipere _‘regain’, a compound verb formed from the prefix re- ‘back, again’ and _capere _‘take’ (source of English capture). Other English descendants of _recipere _are _receipt _[14] (which goes back to medieval Latin recepta, a noun use of the verb’s feminine past participle), _receptacle _[15], _reception _[14], recipe, and _recipient _[16].

receive (v.)
c. 1300, from Old North French receivre (Old French recoivre) "seize, take hold of, pick up; welcome, accept," from Latin recipere "regain, take back, bring back, carry back, recover; take to oneself, take in, admit," from re- "back," though the exact sense here is obscure (see re-) + -cipere, comb. form of capere "to take" (see capable). Radio and (later) television sense is attested from 1908. Related: Received; receiving.
